Son

There is just something so intensely personal about relationship words: mom, dad, son, daughter … son. We know intrinsically what they mean: love, connection, intimacy, commitment. I am feeling the weight and depth and joy of those words this week.

We have another son! His name is Elliott Sunbo, and we know the vitals: he’s 19 months old, from Henan province but being cared for in Shanghai, he has cleft lip and palate (repaired lip, unrepaired palate). We have translated medical records, a handful of pictures and a single two minute video. We have a page of check boxes that indicate that he likes toys that make sounds, looking at picture books, and is occasionally obstinate. (To which we both said: he sounds like Maisie!) And he’s ours.

We said yes a few weeks ago, China said yes this last week, but we have to wait on a few layers of US immigration visa paperwork to clear before we can travel to him – we anticipate meeting and bringing him home in November.

Come on November!
